The Princeton Board of Education met on Thursday night and continued work on plans for current and future needs of the district, including the possibility of new construction at the elementary school.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Christy Stockman, Kaw Valley Engineers are to work on a final drawing and prepare final plans to address storm water drainage issues in the district. The company recently provided information to the board on a survey of the campus, providing two site options for new construction and how to address the drainage concerns.
Option I would place a retaining wall 10 feet tall and approximately 300 feet long. The wall would provide more space between the north side of the elementary building and the large hill on the south side of the high school. This would also allow for more green space and flat ground around the area and a parking lot to the west of the elementary school with 108 parking stalls.
Option II would reduce the cost of construction by providing two alternatives to the first option. This would include developing the land without the retaining wall and moving the playground area to the west of the elementary school. By moving the playground area, the parking area would become smaller with just 60 spaces. It is estimated this option would save around $200,000 in the elimination of the retaining wall. The playground area will be a combination of three surfaces (asphalt, Soft Play and grass), which would also save money although the exact amount is not known.
CTS group, which is also working with the district on the project, has contacted earth moving contractors for a walk-through of the site and campus on Monday, with bids on drainage work to be back to CTS by Monday, Jan. 7. HTK of Overland Park is the architectural firm also working on the proposal, which involves a new addition at the elementary building that could possibly include new preschool classrooms, a band room, an art room and a special education classroom.
The board also held an executive session, with no announcement made.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board is Monday, Dec. 14.
