The city of Chillicothe has been bumped from a list of five communities being considered for location of a new solar farm by MC Power Companies.
According to the Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune, MC Power visited several towns in Missouri to determine which five cities would be good locations for solar farms. Trenton and Macon, where MC Power has already constructed solar farms, were among the five cities on the list, along with Marshall, Waynesville and Rolla. The C-T reported that Waynesville and Rolla bumped Chillicothe from the list of five and that Chillicothe was now being placed on an alternative list for future projects. In addition to Trenton and Macon, MC Power has also constructed a solar farm at Butler.
Local economic developer Terry Rumery told the newspaper that Chillicothe possibly was bumped from the Top 5 due to a Chapter 100 Bond issue, which would have provided MC Power with tax abatement on the bond-financed property, located at the former prison site. Under Chapter 100, the city retains ownership of the real and/or personal property and leases it back to the company under an agreement. The city chose not to issue the bond because of the cost, he said.
Final testing is being done on Trenton’s solar unit, with a dedication planned next Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the solar farm, located in the city industrial park in north Trenton.
