The Trenton High School softball team took it to rival Chillicothe in the regular season final for the Lady Bulldogs on Monday night. Trenton had no trouble putting away the visiting Lady Hornets, picking up a 12-2 victory in five innings at Griffin Field on Senior Night in Trenton.
Trenton attacked early with the long ball as Salem Croy and Daryian Otto went deep in back-to-back at bats. Croy’s was a two-run shot that also scored Jaylen Neff and Otto’s was a solo blast. The power surge gave Trenton a 3-0 lead after one inning of play, but the Lady Bulldogs were just getting started.
Trenton would double its advantage in the second inning with three more runs. Lexie Tolson led off the frame with a single and courtesy runner Tenna Roberts quickly stole second base. Neff then got into the home-run derby, sending a shot over the left-centerfield wall for Trenton’s third homer in two innings. Ainsley Tolson would draw a walk and then score when Whitley Richman just missed a home run, settling for a double off the outfield fence.
Lexie Tolson drove home two more runs in the fourth inning with a single that scored Croy and Mykah Hurley, who was running for Otto. Chillicothe cut the lead to 8-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth, but Trenton came right back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to end the contest by the 10-run rule. Richman and Croy each drove in two and Otto had a two-RBI single that ended the game.
Seniors Otto, Lexie Tolson, Ally Ockenfels and Abby Miller were honored after the victory, Trenton’s 20th on the season.
“We have a special group of seniors that do so much for our team on and off the field,” Lady Bulldogs’ head Coach John Cowling said. “All of our players wanted to make their last home game a special one and I think that showed tonight. Twenty regular season wins is a great accomplishment – something these girls have earned.”
Otto finished the contest two-for-three with her sixth home run of the season and three RBIs. Croy was two-for-three as well with her third home run on the year and three RBIs. Neff was two-for-three driving in two runs, scoring three and hitting her sixth home run of the season as well.
Trenton also got two hits and two RBIs from Lexie Tolson and Mason Hooyman, Taylor Richman and Whitley Richman all tallied one hit each.
