Poosey Fall Drive Is Oct. 18

Sep 29, 2015 | Headline News

The Missouri Department of Conservation will hold its annual fall driving tour through the Poosey Conservation Area on Sunday, Oct. 18.
This will be the 29th year that the Poosey Conservation Area has opened its roads and trails to the public to view examples of the Department’s habitat management practices and to see vibrant fall colors.
The gates will open at noon and the last cars will be allowed through at 4 p.m. The tour route will begin at Pike’s Lake on the northeast side of the area accessed from Route W. The tour will allow visitors to drive through the historical area known as “Poosey.” Historic sites such as the “Panther’s Den” will be included.
The roads will be graded and mostly graveled for easy travel. However, 4-wheel drive and high clearance vehicles are recommended. The tour route will take approximately one hour to complete without stops. Persons should allow more time for stops and discussion.
Resource management practices will be described at various points along the route. Included will be stops explaining prairie grass ecology, noxious weed eradication, forest management, fisheries management and wildlife habitat management. There will be resource professionals present to explain management techniques and answer questions.
Directions to the tour area from Trenton are to take Highway 6 to Route W, turn south and travel to Township Road 502. Follow the signs as you go west on Road 502. At the “T” intersection, go south on Road 519 to Pike’s Lake and continue to follow the signs.
In addition, the Green Hills Trail Association will be hosting a “hike-through” on selected trails of Poosey Conservation Area. The hike-through will take place at the same time as the driving tour. The location for the hike-through event will be at parking lot #20, which is just off of Route A and located near the exit of the driving tour route.
