Betty Jane Torrey, an 87-year-old resident of Mercer, died on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, IA.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 28, 2015) at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, IA with Pastor Ron Helton officiating. Burial was in the Early Cemetery in Mercer.
Mrs. Torrey was born on March 10, 1928 in Mercer County, the daughter of Paul Leroy and Mary Maybell “May” Berndt Little. She was raised in Mercer County, where she was a 1947 graduate of Mercer High School. Besides being a homemaker, she also worked for Dr. Jean Davison in Mercer and in the cafeteria at the Mercer School. But her main occupation was that of a farmer raising livestock, chickens and ducks, which she enjoyed.
She was married on Oct. 21, 1951 to Virgil Glenn Torrey Jr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1991.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Ann Davis and her husband, Scott of Kansas City; one son, Johnnie Joe Torrey of Mercer; five grandchildren, Bryan Glenn, John Glenn and Sammy Allan Torrey, Chelsea Jane and Jeffrey Darrow Davis; one sister, Cora Crawford of Glenrock, WY; a brother, Danny Berndt of Mercer; a daughter-in-law, Stacy Moore of Mercer; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jackie Glenn Torrey; and by a sister, Delores Watson.
