Programs offered by the Green Hills Community Action Agency were the topic of a program presented at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club. Savannah Shipley was the program chairman.
Brandi Pittman, community organizer, said the CAA works with individuals and families considered living in poverty and serves nine counties in the area – Grundy, Mercer, Daviess, Harrison, Linn, Livingston, Sullivan, Putnam and Caldwell. Areas in which the CAA offers help include community services, housing assistance, women’s health services, weatherization, housing development, direct client services and educational workshops. There is a scholarship program where each county in the CAA coverage area can offer two $1,000 scholarships to its clients for continuing education.
Savannah Summers, community services director, told about a project the CAA is working on in which “backpacks” for youth taken from their homes by DFS will be given to them so they will have “something of their own” when they go to their foster home. The CAA is also planning a “Back to School” event for older school children served by the CAA in which they will receive a $50 gift certificate to purchase what they need for the start of school.
During the business meeting, Assistant District Governor Don Gladhart of St. Joseph spoke to the club about Rotary and encouraged members to take part in the Rotary Leadership Institute being offered by the district. He also said that Trenton is near the Top 10 in membership numbers in District 6040.
President Steve Taylor reminded members about the district conference in Kirksville on Oct. 16-17. The late Charlie Hoffman is to be honored as the club’s “District Champion.” A thank you note was also read from the Community Food Pantry for the club’s donation to the Backpack Buddies program.
Next week’s program will be a report on the Missouri Day Parade.
