A “kick-off” public forum to explain the Stronger Economics Together program will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Ketcham Community Center from 1 to 5 p.m.
Through an application process, USDA has designated Daviess, Grundy and Sullivan counties as a SET region. This designation enables counties and communities in rural America to work together in developing and implementing an economic blueprint for their multi-county region that strategically builds on the current and emerging strengths of that region.
According to Green Hills Regional Planning Commission Assistant Director Jackie Soptic, the initiative’s focus is the Highway 6 corridor, which is being referred to as the “Green Hills Heritage Highway.” The premise of the concept is to facilitate the recognition of the commonality that the communities along Highway 6 share through their unique scenic, cultural, historical and economical assets and to further recognize and capitalize on the future economic development opportunities that will arise along the corridor when the Sullivan County Lake project is completed.
Experts from USDA, University Extension and the Humanities Council will be using economic data made available by Purdue University to facilitate five sessions during the next six months culminating with a greater understanding of the current and emerging business trends, economic opportunities, and demographic and socio-economic information. At the conclusion of the sessions, a useable regional plan will be developed and made available for use in a variety of ways for current and future development.
Persons interested in participating are encouraged to attend. To RSVP or for more information, persons can contact Mrs. Soptic by calling the RPC office, 660-359-5636, ext. 12, or by e-mail at [email protected].
