Breast cancer affects nearly everyone. Whether it is a family member, neighbor, friend or co-worker, nearly everyone has been affected in some way.
As a part of early detection and breast cancer awareness, the Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation is teaming up with Hometown Pharmacy to promote awareness across the region.
A special event will kickoff the month long promotion on Thursday, Sep. 24 on the campus of Wright Memorial Hospital. Dr. William Smith, breast radiologist with the Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute will make brief remarks and pink refreshments will be served along with a special balloon launch and short program. Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a fellowship in clinical ultrasound at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston MA. The event will take place near the main entrance of Wright Memorial and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the event beginning at 2 p.m.
The Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation will be selling specially designed t-shirts to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Shirts will be available for only $10 and may be purchased in the hospital gift shop, the hospital foundation office or at Hometown Pharmacy. Proceeds from the sale of shirts will go to the WMH Foundation, specifically to support the radiology department at the hospital.
During the month of October, women over the age of 35 are encouraged to schedule a mammogram appointment as a part of breast cancer awareness and receive free gifts, including the special t-shirt designed by staff of the radiology department. Over 6,000 households in the service area of Wright Memorial have been contacted with a post card reminder of early detection of breast cancer. Persons who failed to receive a card are encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling 660-358-5793.
“We hope to have a great turnout at the kick-off event” said Foundation spokesman Steve Maxey. “Dr. Smith and others are excited to be a part of the program and look forward to doing everything possible to promote early detection and participation in this event. We anticipate lots of breast cancer survivors to join in on the balloon launch and a celebration of early detection.”
