Smith’s Big Night Helps Tigers Top Putnam, 34-25

Sep 1, 2015 | Football, Sports & Recreation

The Princeton High School football team scored a 34-25 victory over Putnam County on Friday night at home on Eddie Allen Field, moving the Tigers to 1-1 overall on the season. The win was the second in the past three seasons, making the Tigers 2-1 against their former coach Dave Cavanah, who has guided the Putnam County Midgets the past three seasons.
Princeton was able to power past Putnam County largely thanks to a big night from sophomore quarterback Andrew Smith. Smith was just 7-of-21 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown pass to Cash Hartley, but on the ground he ran for 160 yards on 15 carries and scored three more times.
The Tigers’ other touchdown came on the ground as well as Hunter Boxley scored. Boxley finished the night with 16 yards on five carries.
Hartley led Princeton receivers with four catches, breaking the century mark with 105 yards and the touchdown.
Defensively, the Tigers were paced by Drew Dailey, who had a team-high 12 tackles and forced a fumble as well. Josh Schoonover added 10 tackles and Boxley had nine tackles, one a quarterback sack. Alec Patterson and Hartley each had nine tackles as well.
The Princeton defense grabbed three interceptions in the game with Cameron Gittings, Garrett Enright and Christian Morgans all picking off the Putnam County quarterback.
“I was proud of my guys,” Tigers’ Head Coach John Goodin said. “We battled for all four quarters and were able to pull away in the end. There is still a lot of work to be done, but this was definitely another step in the right direction for our team.”
The Tigers will look to build off the momentum of the victory this Friday night as they open Grand River Conference play against the South Harrison Bulldogs this week on the road in Bethany. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
