MDC Buying Seed

Aug 24, 2015 | Headline News

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be purchasing seed at the Chillicothe office on select dates this fall. Prices are paid for seed based on species and weight.
Species to be purchased this year include Bur oak, Northern red oak, Black oak, Swamp white oak, Chinkapin oak, Shellbark hickory, Pawpaw, Ohio buckeye, Butternut, Hazelnut, Redbud and Hackberry. A price list for each species and identification guides are available by calling the Chillicothe office at 660-646-6122. Persons with questions about the identity of any seed can bring a sample, with a leaf, so it can be identified. The MDC office is located three miles east of Chillicothe on Highway 36.
The dates designated for seed purchase are Wednesday, Sept. 23; Tuesday, Oct. 6; and Wednesday, Oct. 21. Collection times will be from 2 to 6 p.m.
Seeds collected from natural woodland settings are preferred over seeds collected from nursery bought or planted trees. Seeds should be clean and free from dirt, rocks and twigs. Acorns may include caps. Bur oak acorns must be 1.25 inches or longer. Redbud pods must be brown in color and have seed that is light brown and filled out, not black.
