Families and Friends of the Developmentally Disabled have been awarded a grant toward the purchase of a specially equipped handicapped accessible van to be used by a Trenton woman.
Since June, the city of Trenton and the area has gotten behind the drive to raise $25,000 toward the purchase of a van to be converted to allow Tonya Arndt the freedom to operate the vehicle without assistance. The grant from FFDD raised the bar to within $3,584 needed to complete the funding for the purchase of the van.
During the final phase of preparation by Miss Arndt, she has undergone a driving evaluation or “fitting” to fine tune the rehabilitation technology needed for her to operate the van. A final tuning has warranted the need to order additional parts to complete the adjustment. This work should be finished in the next couple of weeks prior to delivery. The last step she must complete is taking a driving test in her van and then she will then have achieved the status of licensed driver.
Much has transpired since her accident 11 years ago that resulted in a spinal cord injury and her diagnosis of quadriplegia. Miss Arndt’s independent spirit has triumphed over her physical disability to complete her education and is currently very close to gaining the independence of driving to take yet another forward step in her life.
Persons who would like to be a part of this effort to raise the final funds needed for the van can make a donation to “Tonya’s Freedom Fund” at the Farmer’s State Bank in Trenton.
