Having lived nearly all my life in a small community, I have been asked by persons from larger metropolitan areas why I would chose to live where I do. Although there are a variety of reasons, I rediscovered the last few weeks one of the main reasons I feel blessed to live in Trenton.
And that reason is community support.
In the last several weeks I have seen the community come together to support those in need. The tragic death of fireman Eric Lorenz last week brought out the best in our community. I know his family struggles, and will continue to struggle, with his loss. It has to be comforting for them to know just how much the rest of the community cared for them and offered their support. It was in evidence during the large turnout for his funeral and the hundreds of people who lined the route to the cemetery and paid their respects by displaying American flags. I know it will take a long time for them to heal, but they have to know that a large majority of the community is grieving with them; those who knew and loved their son, husband and brother.
I recently felt the same support on a smaller, personal level. With a recent accident involving my wife and daughter, I have received a lot of support which has helped me get them both back toward being healthy again.
And it is not only good friends that come with help, it’s coworkers, casual friends and aquaintances who all offer to help and also do things to help. In a larger city it might just be people in the neighborhood, but in Trenton it is people from all over town that will do anything for you and your family. Everywhere I go in town people are asking how my family is doing and their interest and support is genuine. You just don’t know how valuable that support and caring is until you need it.
We may not have all the material amenities that can be found in larger communities, but we have something much more valuable which can’t be bought – friendly and caring community members who would do anything to help one another. It is a great gift.
