School levies were set by two area boards of education during meetings held on Monday night.
Princeton
The Princeton R-5 Board of Education held three meetingss, beginning with a work session and concluding with the monthly meeting. The tax levy hearing was also held.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Christy Stockman, the board met with representatives from the CTS group and the architectural firm HTK from Overland Park, KS to develop a plan of action to deal with facility concerns within the district. Many specific issues were addressed, including the campus-wide drainage concerns and the need for new classroom spaces.
CTS will come to the Sept. 14 board meeting with information gathered to present options for the board to consider. Depending on the needs of the district, the board may consider approaching the voters with a bond issue in April.
The board voted to pre-pay $150,000 on existing bonds in order to save on future interest expenses. According to Ms. Stockman, the pre-payment will save the district approximately $7,200 in future interest.
The board approved the proposed tax rate as presented for the 2015-16 school year. The incidental rate would be $4.1691, the debt service rate would be $0.9532 and the capital projects rate would be $.1800 for a total tax rate of $5.3023 per $100 assessed valuation.
The board approved the 2015-2016 Annual Secretary Board Report as well as bids for bread, Big G of Princeton; dairy products, Anderson Erickson Dairy; and fuel, MFA Oil of Princeton.
The board heard updates on summer repairs done at the Stacy Center and the high school server room as well as projects still to be completed. The high school roof work is projected to occur in late August or early September as the company doing the work has been delayed due to the rain this summer.
The board approved staff handbooks for both the elementary and high school as well as the local compliance plan certification statement. Administrative reports were heard from Ms. Seymour and Mrs. Miller.
New teachers are meeting today and Thursday, with the school employee in-service set for Monday and Tuesday. The first day of school will be on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The next board meeting will be on Monday, Sept. 14.
Newtown-Harris
The Newtown-Harris Board of Education approved its tax levy and acted on personnel matters during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Kim Johnson, the levy was set for $6.5218 on the $100 assessed valuation. The board approved Ron Hall, Linda Hague and Sandy Busick as bus drivers for the school year with the substitutes being Jerry Kiger, Danny Busick and Tim Tucker. It was announced that Rebecca Roberts has been hired as the social science teacher.
The 2015-16 school calendar was amended to include snow make-up days. Approval was given to the faculty, staff and student handbooks along with the Parents as Teachers program and computer usage policies. Also approved was the Missouri Evaluation Model, the Annual Secretary of the Board Report and several policy updates regarding accounting, collective bargaining, school and community relations and the Family Medical Leave Act.
Ms. Johnson said the projected enrollment for the beginning of school is 83 in grades K-12, with the enrollment being 88 a year ago. The first day of classes will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19. An early dismissal is scheduled for 12:22 p.m.
An open house is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with a barbecue and carry-in dinner hosted by the PTO.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14.
