Stroke, STEMIs Topic Of Rotary Meeting

Jul 24, 2015 | Clubs & Organizations, Meetings

Arlene Ranes, Stroke and STEMI coordinator at Wright Memorial Hospital, gave the program at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club meeting. Tina Capeder was the program chairman.
Ms. Ranes talked about the symptoms for both a stroke and a STEMI (ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction or heart attack), noting they are both similar in nature. The cause of a stroke is a lack of blood to the brain while a STEMI is caused by the coronary artery being completely blocked off by a blood clot. She said that strokes occur in about 800,000 persons a year and is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. Heart attacks occur in about 350,000 persons a year. She noted that strokes and heart attacks can both be prevented.
She also talked about Wright Memorial Hospital being a “stroke designated hospital,” meaning the hospital has received specialized training in treatment of stroke patients who are brought to the emergency room before being transferred. The hospital is also working on being a “heart attack designated” facility as well.
During the business meeting it was announced that beginning in September, the Rotary Club will meet in the First Christian Church Family Activity Center while renovations are being done to the fellowship hall. The meeting time and dates will remain the same.
Plans are being made for the annual fish fry on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Rock Barn. The annual event, which benefits the Rotary International Foundation, includes a meal and free movie. Jeff Crowley is the fish fry chairman.
Next week’s program chairman is Steve Merrin.
