It’s just around the corner. The annual Gooseberry Festival that is.
For the 12th year in a row, the Dr. Nick McHargue family, along with several volunteers, have organized the event, which is held each year during Father’s Day weekend. This year’s activities are slated for Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 21.
What started out as a few ballgames and a mud volleyball tournament has now turned into a three-day event that includes a truck and tractor pull, ATV races, an antique farm equipment show and parade, soccer games and, of course, a gooseberry cooking contest.
An added feature this year is atlatl throwing, which will take place all three days in the North Central Missouri Fairgrounds area. If you’ve never tried this sport, this is your chance. Not only will there be individuals there who have thrown for many years, organizers will also be working with those who have never thrown, including youth, who are especially encouraged to take part.
A complete schedule of events appeared in the Friday, June 5 edition of the Republican-Times and the June 10 edition of the Green Hills Weekly. The schedule will also appear in the June 16 R-T and the June 17 shopper.

The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce will be having a fireworks display on Friday, July 3 as part of the July 4 weekend activities planned in Trenton.
In order to hold the event, donations are being accepted to help with the cost. Around $4,000 is needed to do the show, which will be held in the grassy area on the north and west sides of the Rock Barn. Businesses, organizations and individuals wanting to make a donation can do so by dropping off or mailing their contribution to the Chamber at 617 Main St. Donation boxes are also available at Trenton Main Stop, Casey’s on Ninth and 28th streets and the TNT Convenience Store on 28th Street. Persons can also leave donations at Trenton City Hall. Checks should be made out to the Chamber of Commerce with “fireworks” in the notation.
