The Trenton High School track and field teams were in sectional action Saturday at Blue Springs, competing for a trip to the Class 3 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships. Trenton was able to qualify 11 athletes in seven events at the event.
Lady Bulldogs
Ally Ockenfels punched her ticket to state in a big way, winning the shot put event with a throw of 39-0.5. The win followed her district victory in the event and set her up for a shot at an individual state championship in Jefferson City this weekend. Ockenfels was a state qualifier for the Lady Bulldogs last season as well.
Behind Ockenfels was Ayron Osborn, who also moved on to state for a second-consecutive year, qualifying in the long jump, triple jump and 4×400-meter relay. Osborn finished third in the triple jump, the event she qualified for state in last year, moving on with a jump of 34-11.25. In the long jump, an event Osborn picked up just part way through this season, she qualified with a fourth-place finish with a jump of 16-3.5.
In the 4×400-meter relay, Osborn combined with Tenna Roberts, Whitley Richman and Shayla Woodside to place third with a time of 4:18.49.
In qualifying for state in three events, Osborn became the first Trenton Lady Bulldog to do so since 2012. Osborn just missed qualifying for state in a fourth event as the 4×200-meter relay team of her, Roberts, Lana Raymo and Thelma Guerrero finished fifth with a time of 1:51.33, less than a second behind fourth-place Hogan Prep, the final state qualifier in the event.
Richman was also just shy of moving on in another event, placing fifth in the high jump with a mark of 4-10. Karley McCollum was tied for sixth in the high jump with a mark of 4-6 and Richman ran sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.49. Roberts was sixth in her lone individual event, the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:03.12.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys were paced by their relay teams as two of the three that were in action at sectionals pushed through to state with top-four finishes. The 4×400-meter team of Dalton Ellis, Jonathan Lamp, Wyatt Whittle and Trey Shields finished third with a time of 3:31.21. That mark was over a second better than the time the team turned in at districts in the previous week.
The 4×100-meter relay team, meanwhile, finished fourth with a time of 44.34 to punch its ticket to state. Ellis, Lamp, Travis Leeper and Bailey Owen combined to make up that team.
Trenton’s lone individual qualifier on the boys side was Ellis, who made sure he would stay busy at the state meet by qualifying in a third event, the 300-meter hurdles. Ellis finished with a time of 41.80, good for third and a trip to Jefferson City.
Other Bulldogs in action included the 4×200-meter relay team of Leeper, Shields, Lamp and Owen, which was seventh with a time of 1:33.89; Ellis, who was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.13; and Austin Burkeybile, who was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 36-3.75 and eighth in the long jump with a mark of 18-8. Colton Colston did not record a height in the high jump, finishing eighth officially.
From here, it is on to state for the Trenton 11. The MSHSAA Class 3 Track and Field Championships are set to begin Friday morning at Dwight T. Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University in Jefferson City. The two-day event concludes on Saturday.
