The Trenton High School track and field teams were in St. Joseph on Tuesday, running in the Benton Relays, their final event before the Class 3, District 8 meet in Chillicothe this Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs were third out of nine teams at Benton with 81 points, while the Trenton boys finished sixth on their side of the field with 42 points.
Lady Bulldogs
The Trenton girls held their own in a field of mostly larger schools and trailed second-place Chillicothe by only two points. Lenexa-St. James Academy was the runaway winner of the girls meet, collecting 160 team points.
Ayron Osborn and Ally Ockenfels each picked up gold medals to lead Trenton at the meet. Osborn was first in the triple jump with a mark of 33-11.5 and Ockenfels won the shot put with a throw of 87-11. Osborn would go on to add a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 15-2 and was a part of both the 4×400- and 4×200-meter relay teams, both of which placed as well.
In the 4×400-meter relay, Osborn, Tenna Roberts, Whitley Richman and Shayla Woodside combined to finish second with a time of 4:18.48. Osborn, Roberts, Thelma Guerrero and Lana Raymo combined for a third-place finish in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:54.25.
Roberts had a good showing outside of her relay efforts as well, taking second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.26 and fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.40. Woodside allowed Trenton to double-place in the 400-meter dash, finishing fifth with a time of 1:04.67. Woodside also finished right behind Osborn in the long jump, taking third with a mark of 14-11.5.
Other Trenton placewinners at the meet included Karley McCollum, third in the high jump with a mark of 4-10; Richman, fourth in the high jump with a mark of 4-8.25 and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.87; Mason Hooyman and Cassidy Trump, who tied for fifth in the pole vault after each cleared 7-6; the 4×800-meter relay team of Ivy Rottman, Alainey Fair, Jakolbie Stotts and Kayley Griffin, fourth with a time of 11:29.63; and Guerrero, sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.46 and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.95.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys got one gold medal at the meet courtesy of Dalton Ellis, who won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.37. Ellis was also fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.25 and was also a part of the teams that placed in the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relays.
In the 4×400-meter relay, Ellis combined with Trey Shields, Bailey Owen and Jonathan Lamp to take third with a time of 3:32.86. Ellis, Owen, Lamp and Travis Leeper combined to place fifth in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 44.73. Trenton placed in the 4×200-meter relay as well with Leeper, Lamp, Shields and Owen combining to run fourth with a time of 1:35.93.
Trent Crawford finished second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:35.75 and the Bulldogs double-placed in the long jump, where Leeper was fourth with a mark of 19-8.25 and Austin Burkeybile was sixth with a leap of 18-11. Aaron Anderson was fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 35-11 and Lucas Clark rounded out Trenton’s placewinners with a sixth-place showing in the pole vault after clearing 9-5.75.
In the team standings, Chillicothe won with 133 team points and Benton was second with 118. Lenexa-St. James Academy rounded out the top three with 86 points.
Trenton’s track and field teams will be in district action on Saturday, traveling to Chillicothe for the Class 3, District 8 Track Meet.
