Grundy R-5 Principal Resigns, Newtown-Harris To Co-Op With R-5

The Grundy R-5 and Newtown-Harris boards of education held meetings Monday evening with the R-5 board accepting the resignation of an administrator and the Newtown board agreeing to a sports co-op.

The Grundy R-5 Board of Education accepted the resignation of its elementary principal and amended the current school calendar during a special meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board accepted the resignation of its elementary principal, Kristi Weldon, effective at the end of her current contract. The board also amended the current school year calendar to make Monday, May 18, a full day of classes, with Tuesday, May 19, the last day of school for the year, being an early out. High school classes will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., and elementary classes dismissing at 11:40 a.m.
The next regular meeting of the R-5 Board is scheduled for Thursday, May 14.
Newtown-Harris
The Newtown-Harris Board of Education agreed to co-op with a neighboring district for basketball next year.
According to information provided by Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple, the board made the decision to co-op with the Grundy R-5 School District next year for basketball. The agreement includes both junior high and senior high boys and girls teams. Newtown-Harris already co-ops with Mercer for girls softball.
The board accepted the resignation of Mike Creekmore, who has served as athletic director, coach and physical education instructor for the last two years. He has accepted a position at Princeton.
Board members heard teacher reports from Stephanie Oaks and Laura Craft and approved two seniors, Madison Gibson and Paige Thompson for A-Plus. Six seniors were approved for graduation and seven eighth graders were approved for promotion to high school. Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the school gym. Board members also heard a report on the food service inspection, which went very well.
It was announced that the sports banquet will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 19. The meat for the meal will be provided, with those attending asked to bring a covered dish and table service.
Alison Gibson, Missouri State President of HOSA, and Ben Henry, Missouri State HOSA historian, were present and invited the board, administration, faculty and community to the HOSA Dinner, which is scheduled for May 17. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school gym and will include pork loin, beef biscuit, potatoes, green beans, salads and desserts. A free-will offering will be taken for the meal with proceeds from the event being used to help pay for a trip to the National HOSA Convention in Anaheim, CA this summer.
Other upcoming events announced included: Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8; Red Cross Blood Drive, May 8; District track meet at Bethany, May 9; HOSA induction ceremony, May 18 at 6 p.m.; Little Tiger Relays, May 8, beginning at noon with Dr. Copple grilling hamburgers and hot dogs; the last day of school, May 20, with an 11:30 a.m. dismissal time; and the next board meeting, 7 p.m., Monday, June 8.
