The Trenton High School boys’ golf team traveled to Brookfield for a road triangular with host Brookfield and Hamilton. Being away from their home course did little to slow the Bulldogs’ momentum, however, as Trenton came away with wins over both opponents, shooting a 164. Hamilton was second with a 168 and Brookfield rounded out the field, carding a 187.
Cree Mullenix led the way for Trenton, carding a 39 to tie for medalist honors with Hamilton’s Ethan Green. Mullenix opened with a birdie on one and rolled from there, collecting three pars and another birdie on the fourth hole. Cade Mullenix followed his brother, shooting Trenton’s second-lowest score, a 41. Cade racked up five pars over his round. Corbyn Guile and Nate Swann rounded out Trenton’s team total each carding a 42. Swann had four pars coming on holes four through seven and Guile parred one through three and seven through nine. Nick Gass was also in varsity action, shooting a 43 with three pars on the day.
“Cree had an outstanding round,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “Outside of a double bogey on five, he really had a great day. Cade had another solid day as well just two strokes back of the medalists. Corbyn had to kind of grind out his 42 after a tough stretch on four, five and six but that is still a good score. Nick has been playing much better and earned the five spot today. He turned in a very respectable 43. Nate started out pretty rough but righted the ship and settled down after his first three holes.”
With the wins over Hamilton and Brookfield, Trenton moved to 4-0 on the season in head-to-head play.
Trenton’s junior varsity also picked up wins over Hamilton and Brookfield, carding a team score of 205. Brookfield had a 221 and Hamilton rounded out the JV field with a 224.
Leading Trenton’s JV was Tucker Franklin, who had a 46. Lathan Croy followed with a 47 and Jake Klinginsmith shot a 53. Conner Lovell rounded out the team total with a 59 and Luke Lewis was also in JV action, shooting a 60.
“The JV kind of did what they had to do to win today,” Mullenix said. “It wasn’t their best day but it was the first time away from our home course this season so that could be expected. Tucker was the JV medalist and Lathan was runner-up. That’s a pretty good score for Tucker on a par 36 course. I was very proud of the way he played.
“It was a pretty good day overall for the boys golf team,” Mullenix said. “We had some kids struggle a bit but others stepped up and helped out our team scores on both varsity and JV. Brookfield can be a challenging course. A couple years ago we went over there with a pretty good team and shot a smooth 200 so it was nice to go back over there and play well.”
Trenton’s golf team will be back on the links on Thursday, making up the Park Hill Tournament at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City which was postponed last week. Tee time for the tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. The Bulldogs will also be in action on Friday, traveling to Marceline for a dual with the Tigers. The event tees off at 4 p.m.
