The Trenton High School track and field teams went toe-to-toe with some bigger schools on Thursday, facing the likes of Grain Valley, Oak Park, Harrisonville, Savannah and St. Pius X at the Smithville Relays. For the Lady Bulldogs, it was a successful day as Trenton placed second in a 16-team field with 69 team points. The Trenton boys, meanwhile, finished in the middle of the pack, taking seventh with 43 team points.

On a day when no one was outrunning Grain Valley, Trenton proved to be the best of the rest, finishing runner-up to the Eagles. Grain Valley tallied 92 points to best the field with Trenton (69), Oak Park (65) and North Platte (64) rounding out the top four.
Trenton’s second-place team showing was headed by the usual suspects with Ayron Osborn and Ally Ockenfels scoring gold medals in the triple jump and shot put, respectively. Osborn won the triple jump with a leap of 34-3.5 while Ockenfels broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 40-2.5. The former record was 36-7, set by Ockenfels last season.
Of Trenton’s 69 points, 46 came in the field, behind Osborn and Ockenfels’ gold medals, Trenton double-placed in the pole vault and high jump. Mason Hooyman was second in the pole vault with a mark of 7-6 and Cassidy Trump followed her teammate in fourth, clearing 7-0. In the high jump, it was Karley McCollum collecting a second-place medal with a mark of 4-8.5 and Whitley Richman followed in fourth after clearing 4-8.
Shayla Woodside also placed in the field, taking seventh in the long jump with a jump of 14-6.75.
On the track, Trenton was led by Tenna Roberts and Richman. Roberts was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.58 and sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.44. Richman placed in both hurdle events, taking sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.84 and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.21.
The 4×400-meter relay team of Osborn, Woodside, Richman and Roberts finished fourth with a time of 4:29.81 and the 4×200-meter relay team of Thelma Guerrero, Lana Raymo, Abbie Shuler and Trump finished seventh with a time of 55.91. Osborn also placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:11.47.

Lincoln College Prep was second with 89 team points, Oak Park was third with 79.5, Harrisonville was fourth with 65 and Lathrop rounded out the top five with 56. Smithville was sixth with 54 points, the last team ahead of Trenton in seventh with its 46 points.
The Bulldogs won one event at the meet, the 4×100-meter relay. Travis Leeper, Jonathan Lamp, Dalton Ellis and Bailey Owen combined to take the gold with a time of 44.72. Leeper, Lamp and Owen would team with Trey Shields to place third in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:36.13.
Trenton’s other two relay teams placed as well with the 4×400-meter relay team of Lamp, Ellis, Shields and Zac Smith placing fifth with a time of 3:45.72 and the 4×800-meter relay team of Thomas Mack, Jose Barron, Spencer Harris and Kail McCarter placing eighth with a time of 9:40.50.
