Council Overrides Veto, Abolishes Board of Public Works

Apr 2, 2015 | Announcements, City Council

The Trenton City Council voted to abolish the Board of Public Works during a special meeting held this morning.
The vote was 6-1 to override Mayor Dr. Nick McHargue’s veto of the measure, with First Ward Councilman Allan Quilty voting against it and Third Ward Councilman Travis Elbert absent. Members of the council voiced concerns about the 2015 budget process and the need to manage the utility in such a way as to avoid excess expenditures. According to a new release from City Attorney Tara Walker, “the vote is an effort by the city council to increase efficiency, contain costs and most importantly, to manage utility rates for the citizens of Trenton.” Councilman Mark Robinson noted that the BPW has been abolished in the past. Ordinances abolishing the board will come before the council at it’s regular meeting set for April 13.
