Pirates Drop Finale With Elgin

Mar 26, 2015 | Baseball, Sports & Recreation

The North Central Missouri College baseball team dropped the final game of its South Carolina swing, falling 4-2 to Elgin Community College on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach. The loss was the third in a row to Elgin, who also defeated the Pirates 8-0 and 1-0 on Tuesday.
The Pirates fell behind 3-0 in the first three innings of Wednesday’s game, before getting on the board in the fourth with a pair of runs. The two-run inning snapped a scoreless streak of 22 innings. Unfortunately, that would be all the Pirates got as Elgin tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, winning 4-2 in the end.
The Pirates’ runs in the fourth came when Stephan Vidal scored on a wild pitch. He reached base after being hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on a double by Landon Figg. Figg moved to third on the wild pitch that scored Vidal and then scored himself on an RBI single by Smith Kemper.
Figg finished two-for-three to lead the Pirates, amassing half of the team’s four hits on the day. Kemper added his single and AJ Salinas singled as well to round out the offense.
On the hill, Gordon Arthaud (0-5) took the loss after starting and throwing just two frames. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk. Wes Davis threw three and one-third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Ethan Massman closed the game, going one and two-thirds innings and allowing no runs, hits or walks.
With the loss the Pirates fell to 9-15 on the season. NCMC will look to bounce back on Saturday as they return to Region 16 play, hosting Maple Woods Community College at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton. The first pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. The Pirates will travel to Kansas City on Sunday to complete the four game series with a doubleheader at Maple Woods, which also begins at 1 p.m.
From Tuesday
The Pirates second game Tuesday ended in a 1-0 loss as North Central was shut out for a second-straight game. Nolberto Rondon (2-4) was solid on the hill for the Pirates, but took the loss after giving up one unearned run on seven hits and no walks. Rondon fanned seven in the game.
Offensively, the Pirates struggled, collecting just four hits in the contest. Figg, Vidal, Salinas and Jordan Bardwell all had one hit each.
