The North Central Missouri College baseball team continued its South Carolina swing this week, playing two games on Monday and a single game on Tuesday. North Central split Monday, defeating Jamestown Community College 10-0 before falling to Brunswick Community College 9-2. On Tuesday, the Pirates were shut out by Elgin Community College 8-0.
Monday
The Pirates got off to a good start, running away with a 10-0 win. NCMC scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings and then closed the game with three-run spots in the sixth and seventh innings. Aspen Taylor (2-0) was the winning pitcher, throwing six shutout innings. Taylor allowed no runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. Cedeon Langguth fired the seventh, walking one as he completed the shutout.
At the plate, the Pirates got a lot of offense, but James Brownsberger was particularly good, going three-for-three with three RBIs. Turner Herbek was two-for-three with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored and Smith Kemper had a double and two runs scored. Stephan Vidal tripled and scored once.
In game two, the Pirates were outscored 3-1 in both the first and second innings. Brunswick would add three more runs the rest of the way while the Pirate bats fell silent in a seven-run loss.
NCMC had just four hits in the game, coming from Kemper, Vidal, AJ Salinas and Jordan Bardwell. Barwell added a run scored and two steals and Salinas had an RBI and a steal. Vidal had an RBI and Kemper scored the other Pirate run.
On the hill, Gordon Arthaud (0-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks while striking out two in three innings of work. Matt Miles allowed one earned run in three innings and Maverich Lourens allowed two unearned runs in the final frame. NCMC committed two errors in the game.
Tuesday
Tuesday saw the Pirates drop a single game to Elgin Community College. The Pirates’ offense was shut out on the day, collecting just three hits. Cortlen Austin, Brownsberger and Kemper had the three hits for North Central. Zach Cross (2-3) was the losing pitcher for the Pirates. Cross allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out one in two innings. Justin Riggins fired the final four frames, allowing two earned runs. The Pirates’ defense committed three more errors in the loss.
North Central now stands at 9-13 on the season. After wrapping up in South Carolina today, the Pirates will be at home on Saturday, playing host to Maple Woods Community College at 1 p.m. NCMC will travel to Kansas City to take on Maple Woods on Sunday to complete the home-and-home four game series. Action on Sunday also begins at 1 p.m.
