Roof bids and personnel highlighted meetings of the Pleasant View R-6 and Newtown-Harris school boards held this week.
Pleasant View R-6
The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education took action on several items at its meeting on Tuesday night.
According to Superintendent Tiffany Otto, the board accepted a bid for its roof project as well as approved the 2015-16 school calendar, class field trips and a report on the Title 1 program.
Roberts Roofing of St. Joseph was approved to do the roof work at a cost of $145,915. It was one of seven bids considered by the board, with the work to begin around June 1. Nearly 10,000 square feet of flat roof will need to be replaced after a recent hail storm, according to a report provided by Roofing Solutions, Inc of Overland Park, KS. The work will include replacing the roof with a 90 mil EPDM system that will provide the district with a 30-year manufacturer’s warranty.
In other business, the board approved the 2015-16 school calendar, which sets the start of school on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Mrs. Williams, Title 1 Teacher, presented a Reading Recovery report to the board, which profiled the overall components of the program, monies received from an I3 grant to support the program in the district and the progress students have made in the program. The grant provides assistance to the district for three years.
Approval was given for the fifth and sixth grade class to attend the Water Festival in Daviess County due to a scheduling conflict in Grundy County and for the first through fourth grades to travel to the Kansas City Zoo on May 11 for their end-of-the-year field trip.
In an executive session, all teacher evaluations were reviewed and probationary teachers were offered contracts for the 2015-16 school year.
The next regular board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 14.
Newtown-Harris
During its meeting on Monday night, the Newtown-Harris Board of Education issued non-tenured teacher contracts and delayed action on hiring a principal.
According to information provided by Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple, the board unanimously approved contracts for Stormie Corwin, Jaci Rhoades, Laura Craft, Kim Parsons, Tashyana Dowell, Cathy Renner, Michael Creekmore and Jerry Kiger. The contracts would be for the 2015-16 school year.
After public comment, the board also decided to table further action on hiring a principal and will reconsider the contract of current principal Misty Foster at the April meeting. The board in February had voted not to offer Mrs. Foster a contract for next school year.
The board employed six persons as summer workers, including Ben Henry, Tanner Rhoades, Blake Foster, Roni Busick, Lindsey Tovrea and Esley Ortega.
It was announced that parent-teacher conferences would be held on Thursday, March 19 from 2 to 6 p.m., with no classes on Friday, March 20. Preschool round-up will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 and the spring HDC meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 24 at Cainsville.
The district will be participating in a Drive One 4UR School event on Saturday, April 11. Proceeds from the event will benefit the local FFA chapter and will be held jointly with the Milan FFA chapter and Barnes baker of Trenton. The Newtown-Harris alumni basketball game, sponsored by the HOSA chapter, will be held on the same day, with a supper at 5 p.m. and games starting at 6 p.m.
Dr. Copple reported that the FFA Washington Leadership Conference fundraiser was a success, with money being used for FFA students to attend the WLC this summer. The elementary basketball tournament is going on this week and will continue through this evening. The board heard reports from Mrs. Parsons and Mrs. Dowell.
The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 13.
