Duane Dailey Gives Program

Feb 20, 2015 | Clubs & Organizations, Meetings

University of Missouri Extension Senior Writer Duane Dailey presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Phil Hoffman was the program chairman.
Dailey, a native of Mercer County, continues to write for the university even after having retired. He also writes a column, “Hometown Boy,” once a week. The column appears in the Trenton Republican-Times.
Dailey talked about agriculture, in particular beef cattle, an area in which he has a particular interest having been involved in the cattle business for many years while growing up in South Lineville. He recently attended the Missouri Governor’s Conference on Beef, during which time discussions were held in regard to how to make the beef industry in Missouri more efficient as well as how to keep more of a cow’s sale in the state. The University of Missouri has the Thompson Farm in rural Spickard that, according to Dailey, is the “greatest indicator of success in beef in the world.” He said that countries such as Russia and Brazil are using information developed at the Thompson Farm for improving their cattle production.
Dailey said there are 1.8 million head of cattle in Missouri, making it number three in the U.S. behind Texas and Oklahoma. He called Missouri the top state in which prime beef can be obtained and said Missouri needs to continue its efforts in making sure it maintains that reputation.
During the business meeting, it was announced that fines being collected from now until the end of April will be used for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project.
Next week’s program chairman is Gary Jordan.
