The Trenton High School basketball teams were in action over the weekend, gunning for consolation trophies at the Lawson Tournament. Unfortunately, neither the Lady Bulldogs nor the Bulldogs were able to bring trophies back to Trenton as the girls fell 24-23 to Richmond and the boys lost 60-41 to West Platte.
Lady Bulldogs
The Trenton girls lost by the nearest margin possible as a last second free throw gave Richmond the consolation win.
“That was a tough loss,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Brian Upton said. “We fought, scrapped and played very hard. It is a downer to lose on a last-second free throw, but we worked really hard throughout the game to even put us in a position to win. I was really proud of these girls and how hard they competed.”
Trenton trailed 5-4 after a slow, defensive first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held Richmond scoreless in the second quarter and took a 9-5 lead into the locker room at halftime. The scoring continued to be slim in the third quarter and the Lady Bulldogs maintained a 15-11 lead heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, however, Lawson more than doubled their total for the game, outscoring Trenton 13-8 to rally for the victory.
Trenton was paced by Whitley Richman, who had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Ally Ockenfels added six points and six rebounds and Lexie Tolson had four points, eight rebounds and three assists. Daryian Otto rounded out the Trenton total with two points.
With the loss, Trenton fell to 8-6 overall on the season.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys dug themselves a pretty big hole in the first quarter, falling behind 18-9. Trenton outscored West Platte in both the second and third quarters, trimming the lead to 37-31 entering the final frame. Trenton continued to trail by just six points into the fourth quarter, but was forced to press and foul down the stretch, leading to a 23-point effort from West Platte over the final eight minutes. The Blue Jays were a perfect eight-of-eight from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, helping them pull away for the 19-point win.
“It wasn’t our best basketball game,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We struggled executing what we instituted as a game plan in practice.”
Trenton was led by Connor Cotton, who had nine points and 10 rebounds. Spencer Harris added eight points, Colton Neff had six and Kail McCarter finished with five points and six assists. Trenton also got four points from Chris Flowers, three points and two steals from Cree Mullenix and two points, three assists and two steals from Cade Mullenix. Aaron Anderson rounded out the Trenton total with two points.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 7-7 on the season.
Next up for Trenton is a road test in Chillicothe on Tuesday. Action tips off at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game and the boys’ contest will follow.
