Trenton got off to a quick start in the contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, but quickly went cold on the offensive end. A three-pointer just before the buzzer by Cree Mullenix gave Trenton a 10-6 advantage, however. Trenton’s offensive woes carried over to the second quarter, but a tough effort on the defensive end saw Trenton trail just 17-16 at halftime.
In the second half both defenses continued to be the story of the game, but a 7-0 run by Maryville to end the third quarter sent the Spoofhounds into the final frame with a 33-28 lead. Trenton answered with a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter, but Maryville held a 44-40 advantage with two minutes left in the game. Trenton had to resort to fouling the Spoofhounds in an attempt to catch up and the ’Hounds hit seven-of-eight free throws down the stretch to seal the five-point win.
“It was an early basketball game,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We started alright offensively and our defense was pretty solid throughout the game. We just didn’t do a good job of executing on offense and we didn’t do a good job of getting the kind of shots we were looking for. We are capable of playing a little better than that, but Maryville is a good team. They were able to play well against us, they were able to score when they needed to and they got stops when they had to have them. So I thought we played a good basketball game, just not well enough to beat a team of that caliber.”
Trenton was paced by 13 points from Chris Flowers and Cree Mullenix had 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kail McCarter added seven points and two assists, Spencer Harris had six points and Cade Mullenix finished with five points. Colton Neff, Brice Dillon and Aaron Anderson all had one point to round out the Trenton total.
With the loss, Trenton fell to 5-4. The Bulldogs will look to get back on track on Tuesday, Jan. 6 as they play host to Mid-Buchanan. Action tips off with a JV boys’ game at 5 p.m. followed by a varsity girls’ game and then the varsity boys’ contest.
