The Trenton High School boys’ basketball team is rolling. The Bulldogs picked up their fourth-straight win on Monday at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton, topping Albany 64-52 at North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops.
Following the Gallatin Tournament, Trenton stood at 1-3. Since the loss in the third-place game in Gallatin, however, Trenton is perfect, winners of four straight.
The Bulldogs didn’t exactly come out on fire against Albany, struggling with a few turnovers. A couple of three-pointers from Cree Mullenix, some strong post play from Chris Flowers and a spark off the bench from Brice Dillon allowed Trenton to take an 18-13 lead entering the second quarter, however. In the second frame, Trenton really got things going offensively, racking up 24 points to go into halftime up 42-29 on the Warriors.
Albany would make a run in the third quarter, cutting the Trenton lead to 50-42, but the Bulldogs put the game away in the final frame, closing the contest with a 14-10 fourth-quarter run.
“Albany’s got a pretty good team,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “They played pretty good defense against us, especially in the first quarter. They shot the ball very well and they were a very respectable opponent. So, this was a good win for us to get out of there with.
“We didn’t start out very well, but after the first couple of minutes it seemed like we settled in. We shot the ball really well, played solid defense and we handled some pressure here and there.”
Trenton was led by Chris Flowers, who had a game-high 19 points to go with 11 rebounds and two assists. Brice Dillon added 16 points and Cree Mullenix finished with 11.
Trenton also got five points and four assists from Cade Mullenix and four points and four assists from Spencer Harris. Kail McCarter had three points, four assists and two steals and Aaron Anderson, Connor Cotton and Colton Neff all had two points each to round out the Trenton total.
“We got some great basketball games tonight,” Austin said. “This was probably the best game of the year so far for Flowers. He made it all happen all together. He had 11 boards and 19 points or so and those are big stats for us. He hasn’t always been that aggressive on the boards like he was tonight so that was good to see. Brice came in off the bench and hit some big shots for us and made big plays for us.
“It was really just a great game for us going into break. We have practice today and then a few days off and we will get ready for Maryville after that.”
The win pushed the Bulldogs’ season record to 5-3 overall. Trenton will return to the court one more time at Holiday Hoops, taking on Maryville on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 10:30 a.m. The game follows a match-up between the Trenton High School girls and Falls City, NE. That match-up tips off at 9 o’clock.
