The Trenton Lady Bulldogs nearly picked up a big time statement win on Saturday night at North Central Missouri College’s High School Holiday Hoops. Trenton gave the Lafayette Irish everything they could handle at the Ketcham Community Center, but fell just short in a 40-33 loss.
Trenton had everything clicking in the first half, matching the St. Joseph school stride-for-stride. Trenton was tied at 11-11 after the first quarter and led 17-15 at halftime.
Trenton started the second half with McKinley Hurley picking up a steal and taking it the other way for an easy layup, pushing the Trenton lead to four points. The next four Trenton possessions ended in turnovers, however, and Lafayette took advantage, turning the tables from a four-point deficit to a four-point lead. Trenton trailed 28-25 entering the final frame and could come no closer, falling by seven in the end.
“This was a tough loss to a good team,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Brian Upton said. “We played with them until a bad stretch in the third quarter. We had a couple of defensive breakdowns and four empty possessions in a row on offense that resulted in four turnovers. We had more turnovers in the third quarter – nine- than the rest of the game combined.”
Trenton also struggled to contain 6-2 Lafayette center Ashlyn Dotson, who led all scorers in the contest with 23 points.

“We had a lot of trouble with the 6-2 post,” Upton said. “She was active and accurate. Overall I was really proud of the effort, though. We just couldn’t execute when they really turned up the defensive pressure.”
Trenton was paced by Hurley, who finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Whitley Richman provided 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Trenton also got five points and three assists from Lexie Tolson and two points, six rebounds and three assists from Ally Ockenfels.
With the loss, Trenton had a four game winning streak snapped. The Lady Bulldogs now stand at 5-3 on the season.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action at Holiday Hoops on Tuesday, Dec. 30, taking on Falls City, NE at 10:30 a.m. The game follows the Trenton boys match-up with Maryville at 9 a.m. The Trenton boys are also in action at Holiday Hoops today, taking on Albany at 4 o’clock.
