Tri-County, Newtown-Harris Face Off At HDC Tourney

For the third time this season, the Newtown-Harris and Tri-County girls met on the court.
The teams played their HDC Conference match-up on Nov. 25 and met in the seventh-place game of the Gallatin Tournament on Dec. 5.
On Tuesday night, the girls teams from Tri-County and Newtown-Harris faced off again, this time at the HDC Conference Tournament in Pattonsburg. The result was the same as the previous two meetings as the Newtown girls beat Tri-County for the third time this year, this time by a score of 36-18. The Tri-County boys, meanwhile, topped the Newtown boys for the second time this year, winning 52-25.
Girls
The girls game didn’t see much offense, but the Lady Tigers pulled out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter and the seven point lead was still intact at the break with Newtown up 13-6. Newtown narrowly outscored Tri-County in both of the final two periods, slowly pulling away for the 18-point win.
Abby Wells led Newtown-Harris with 11 points and Madison Gibson added eight. Roni Busick and Kendra Johnson added six points each. For Tri-County, Katana Almond led the way with six points.
The win moved the Newtown girls to 3-4 on the season while the Lady Mustangs fell to 0-8.
Boys
The boys game saw Tri-County grab a slim 11-9 lead in the first quarter, but the mustangs really broke the game open in the second, going on a 19-6 run. The Mustangs continued to outscore Newtown in the second half, pulling away for the 27-point win.
Johnathan Swymeler led the Mustangs with 21 points with Dillon Cook and Derek Swymeler adding 17 and 10 points respectively. Newtown, meanwhile, was paced by 13 points from Ismael Garcia and 10 from Blake Foster.
With the victory, Tri-County improved to 3-5 on the season while the Newtown-Harris boys were dropped to 0-7.
The N-H teams will return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 23, taking on Adair County at the NCMC Holiday Hoops. Action in the Ketcham Community Center is set to tip off at noon with the girls game and the boys will follow at 1:30.
Tri-County’s teams will be back on the floor on Monday, Jan. 5, traveling to Breckenridge for a non-conference doubleheader. Action tips off at 6 p.m. with the girls game and the boys will follow.
