Over the past week and a half, rumors have began circulating around Trenton’s independent sports status. Trenton’s athletic teams have been independent of conference affiliation since the school left the Midland Empire Conference in the late 1980’s.
Now, talk has surfaced about the Bulldog athletic teams potentially joining an expanded Grand River Conference. Trenton athletic director Wes Croy released a statement on the rumors Monday evening.
“The Trenton R-9 School District has the utmost respect for the Grand River Conference,” Croy said. “We hold it in very high regard and enjoy our current competition in various activities with many of the GRC-member schools. We feel the integrity, stability, tradition and logistics of the Grand River Conference makes it an appealing option for Trenton R-9 if an opportunity for membership were presented.”
Trenton currently competes with a number of GRC schools in various sports, including football, wrestling, basketball, softball, golf and track and field. Croy himself was a football coach at both Maysville and South Harrison, current GRC-member schools.
Should Trenton end up in the GRC, it would be the largest school in the conference. The idea has been floated of a split GRC with one group containing the larger schools in the conference and the other consisting of the conference’s smaller schools. Such a format would be similar to the Missouri River Valley Conference, which is split between larger schools like Excelsior Springs and smaller schools such as Carrollton.
Other rumors have surfaced suggesting Milan and Putnam County could be additions to the conference alongside Trenton.
