R-5 Board Reviews Candidate Requirements

The Grundy R-5 Board of Education took action on several items and heard reports during its meeting on Wednesday night at the school in Galt.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board approved the hard surface-only bus routes to be used by the district in case of poor road conditions. Approval was given to lease a new copy machine with IKON, with the overall cost being $16 per month higher than the previous lease. Also approved was movement of the December employee pay day from Monday, Dec. 15 to Friday, Dec. 12.
New candidate filing requirements were reviewed, which includes candidates having a notarized affidavit from the Missouri Department of Revenue that they are current on their taxes and are not delinquent on their state income, personal property, municipal or real property taxes on their place of residence. The dates to file for the R-5 Board of Education open on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and continue through Tuesday, Jan. 20. The three-year terms of Eric Gann and Jessica Webb are expiring.
The elementary principal report included the year-to-date attendance at 96.31 percent. Local Hoop Shoot winners were recognized and an update on upcoming activities was given.
At the junior high/high school, year-to-date attendance is 96.27 percent. Recognized as spelling bee winners were Ellen Baxter and Katie Turpin, seventh grade; Alissa Webb, eighth grade; and Jandie Peterson, seventh grade, alternate. Emily Torrey was recognized as the local winner of the American Legion Oratorical contest for a speech she delivered and will compete at the district level in January. Morgan Axtell, an eighth grader, was recognized for placing fifth in the northwest district sportsmanship essay contest sponsored by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. The new teacher evaluation system was discussed with board members.
The board heard faculty reports for seventh to 12th grade science, third grade, fifth and sixth grade math and sixth grade English/Language Arts. Approval was given to the program evaluation for vocational agriculture.
Classes will dismiss early on Friday, Dec. 19 for the Christmas break. The high school will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. and the elementary school will dismiss at 11:40 a.m. School resumes on Jan. 5.
A closed session was held for personnel and a student matter, with no announcement made.
The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8 at the high school in Galt.
