Dec 9, 2014 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

The Trenton High School freshman basketball teams were in action on Monday night, playing host to Chillicothe’s freshman teams at home. The Lady Bulldogs were able to come away with a 22-21 victory, but the Trenton boys fell 32-17.
Lady Bulldogs
The freshman girls team played it’s first game of the season. Trenton jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter lead, but would have to hang on in the end. Trenton managed just four points in the second and third quarters combined, but a good defensive effort kept Trenton in front, leading 15-11 going into the final frame. Chillicothe tied the game late in the fourth quarter, but Samantha Mihalovich hit one-of-two free throws with 12 seconds left to give the lead back to Trenton. A last-second three-pointer by the Lady Hornets rimmed out and Trenton took the one-point win.
Claire Utley led Trenton with six points and Ashten Whitaker added five. Lauren Dolan and Katerina Black each scored four points and Jordain Oshel and Mihalovich had two and one point respectively.
The win established a 1-0 record on the season for the Trenton freshman girls.
Bulldogs
The Bulldog defense kept them in the game early, going into halftime tied 7-7. However, the Hornets got going in the second half, outscoring Trenton 12-3 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the fourth.
“I was really proud of our effort tonight,” Coach Kameron Cool said. “I thought we played incredibly hard, especially on defense.”
Kade Ockenfels led all Bulldog scorers with six points, followed by Hunter Dugan with five. Cole Schilling and Alex Parrack added two points each, with Cade Darting and Jimmy Flowers rounding out the scoring with one point each.
With the loss, Trenton’s freshman team fell to 0-2 on the season.
Both Trenton freshman squads will be back on the court at home again on Thursday. Trenton will host the Lawson freshman teams in a doubleheader, beginning with the girls game at 6 p.m.
