Dow Lamar, a 91-year-old resident of Jamesport, died on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014 at the Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 at the Jamesport Baptist Church. Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery near Jamesport.
A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. General visitation begins after 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 at McWilliams Funeral Home in Jamesport.
Mr. Lamar was born on June 23, 1923 in Jamesport, the son of Verly and Mary Elizabeth Fowlor Lamar. He attended schools in Jamesport and Oklahoma. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943 and proudly served his country for two years. He was discharged in January of 1945 with a commendation for service in the Normandy Invasion and a Purple Heart, a true hero.
After returning home he began his trucking career driving a transport gas tanker in Oklahoma. He moved back to Jamesport, where he owned and operated his own trucking company.
Mr. Lamar was married in Chillicothe on April 13, 1961 to Mary McCoy Wright and the couple made their home in Jamesport. The couple worked as a team-driving dump and lime trucks for 20 years. After selling the business in 1982, Mr. Lamar was employed at Shuler Mausoleum for several years and later worked at the Jamesport School District where he served as custodian and drove a bus. He liked to stay busy and enjoyed working with the public. He could strike up a conversation with anyone.
Mr. Lamar was a member of the Jamesport Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship he shared with his church family. He was an avid camper and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked taking long drives in the country just to see the sights and enjoy the beauty of nature. He would go to the Senior Center and especially enjoyed their dances that they held.
He was a loving father and grandfather who greatly enjoyed his family and friends. He was always there to brighten their lives. He was a kind and gentle man whose legacy of hope, faith and hard work will live on through those who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. Lamar is survived by two sons, Earle Wright and his wife, Brenda of Jamesport and Steven Lamar and his wife, Becky of Trenton; a daughter, Sherry Ann Hopson of Mound, TX; three grandsons, Jamison Lamar of Trenton, Dillon Wright of Jamesport and Billy Hopson of Texas; a granddaughter, Lanelle Hopson of Texas; and a special friend, Daisy Pierce of Jamesport.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary on Jan. 10, 2004; three brothers, Bill, V.O. and Ovid; and one sister, Mary Saul
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jamesport Baptist Church or the Clear Creek Cemetery in care of McWilliams Funeral Home in Jamesport.
