Jessica Nelson has joined the Grundy County Health Department as a breastfeeding peer counselor.
Miss Nelson has been with the health department since October and offers lactation education, support and consultation to mothers in the community. She is a native of Daviess County, graduating from North Daviess R-3 in 2000 and from North Central Missouri College in 2002. She also is the breastfeeding peer counselor at the Daviess County Health Department. One of her goals is to help struggling mothers reach their breastfeeding goals and to promote the normalization of breastfeeding.
According to the health department, breast milk is the healthiest way to feed your infant. There are many benefits of breast milk such as the prevention of SIDS and significant brain growth which leads to a higher IQ. Additionally, breast milk is easier for the baby to digest and it passes the mothers immunities onto the baby. Many mothers are realizing these important benefits and are giving their baby the best start to a healthy life by choosing to breastfeed.
The Grundy County Health Department also offers a variety of breast pumps and incentives for breastfeeding mothers in addition to breastfeeding support and education.
Persons who have any breastfeeding questions or concerns, need a breast pump or would like to have a lactation consultation can call 660-359-4196 to schedule an appointment with Ms. Nelson.
