Vern Allen, an 89-year-old resident of Chillicothe, died on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at the Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Burial will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens at Chillicothe.
General visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014 at the funeral home, where a family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 that evening.
Mr. Allen was born on June 12, 1925 in rural Utica, the son of Arron Mott and Elgie Etta Noble Allen. He served in the United States Marines from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. He was married on Dec. 4, 1949 in Independence to Palma “Jean” Prewitt, who survives of the home. He worked as a farmer all his life and also worked as a rural mail carrier in Chula for 32 years.
Mr. Allen was a board member for the Chula Co-op, Cream Ridge Township and the Chula Fire Department. He was a lifelong member of the Vern R. Glick American Legion Post 25 and the VFW Roy L Burkette Post 858, serving as commander three times. At the time he served as commander when the Veterans Memorial was placed on the Livingston County Courthouse grounds and worked to petition to rename Highway 36 to the VFW Memorial Highway. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, MANN, Missouri Rural Letter Carriers Association, Livingston County Steam and Gas Association and the Lathrop Antique Car, Gas and Steam Association. He also served as a school board member for the Livingston County R-3 School District at Chula.
Survivors include his wife Palma Jean Allen of the home; two sons, Vern Allen Jr. and his wife Dee of Mooresville and Timmy Allen and his wife, Cherie of Trenton; one daughter, Charlotte and her husband, Carl “Buck” Gunter of Chula; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rollie, Vollie, Harley and Charley; one infant sister; and one grandson, Jamie Allen.
