Parts of Grundy County are included in the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which provides financial and technical assistance to help farmers implement conservation practices that target runoff from agricultural land.
Under MRBI, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will work with conservation partners to provide technical and financial assistance during federal fiscal year 2015 for projects in five Missouri watersheds. This area is part of the Medicine and Muddy Creek watershed, a smaller watershed within the Mississippi River basin. Funding is available to eligible landowners who apply by Dec. 19.
MRBI helps farmers and ranchers improve water quality throughout the Mississippi River basin. It uses a conservation systems approach to manage nitrogen and phosphorous. Its goal is to minimize runoff and reduce downstream nutrient loading.
