The Trenton Middle School basketball teams were in action on Thursday night, battling for championships at the Princeton Middle School Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs laid claim to the tournament title with a 52-12 romp over Gallatin. The TMS boys, however, came up short of a first-place finish, falling to South Harrison 40-23.
Lady Bulldogs
The Trenton girls jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter behind some good pressure defense. Trenton led 29-9 at halftime and coasted through the second half en route to the victory.
“Our defense was a big key to the win,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Ched Hurley said. “We had 26 steals, 27 deflections, 5 blocked shots, and 14 defensive rebounds. Offensively, we didn’t execute great but our transition game was really good. We ended with 16 assists on 21 baskets with only 11 turnovers.”
Trenton shot 49 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line.
“Overall this was our best performance on the year,” Hurley said. “We want to build off of this and continue to get better.”
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys were unable to pick up a championship following the girls as the Bulldogs wound up falling to South Harrison by 17 points. Jadan Whitney led Trenton with 10 points and Carson Radcliff had six points and nine rebounds.
“South Harrison had an experienced group with a lot of talent, but we showed a lot of fight by only being down 17-11 at halftime,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Mitchell Holder said. “It was a loss but the team is getting better each time we play.”
Trenton’s middle school basketball teams return to the court tonight, playing host to Carrollton in a game originally scheduled for Dec. 16. Action tips off in the TMS gym at 5 p.m. There will be no B games tonight.
Monday at Chillicothe Trenton will face the Hornets with four games being played. Action starts at 4:30 p.m. with the girls’ B game. The boys’ B game will follow before the A teams take the floor.
