John W. Mayo, an 82-year-old resident of St. Joseph and formerly of Trenton, died on Sunday morning, Nov. 16, 2014, at Riverside Place in St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton with Pastor Mark Mayo officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, north of Trenton.
Family visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Mayo was born on Jan. 3, 1932, in Mendon, the son of Harry Relvia and Georgia Thelma Riley Mayo. He graduated from Trenton High School in 1949 and later from Trenton Junior College and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was involved in several civic, Masonic and banking organizations and rode motorcycles for 40 years. He moved to St. Joseph from Trenton in 1983.
Mr. Mayo was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Trenton.
He was married in Trenton on Aug. 8, 1945 to Pauline Browning.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of St. Joseph; a son, Mark Mayo and his wife, Joyce of St. Joseph; three grandchildren, Philip Mayo of Eugene, OR, Mary Mayo of Chicago, IL and Hannah Krauskopf and her husband Kevin of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Elias and Jane Krauskopf; and one sister, Elizabeth Ann Sibbitt of Corydon, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, John Edwin Mayo; and two brothers, George Mayo and Harry Mayo.
Memorials are suggested to the Christian Motorcyclists Association and may be sent to the funeral home or made online.
