The Laredo R-7 and Newtown-Harris boards of education met Monday evening, setting the filing dates for the April 7 board election.

According to information provided by Laredo R-7 Superintendent Phil Fox, the board set the filing dates for the April 7, 2015 election as Dec. 16 at 8 a.m. until Jan. 20, 2015 at 5 p.m. The school office will close at 1 p.m., Dec. 19 and reopen on Jan. 5, 2015 at 8 a.m. The office will also be closed for inclement weather. The three-year terms of Brad Wilford and Matt Foster will expire.
A discussion was held on fifth and sixth grade basketball, with the board approving the participation of third through sixth grade boys and fifth and sixth grade girls eligible to participate after the first of the year. The board also agreed to advertise for snow removal bids and agreed to post updated signs concerning playground rules for after school hours. The 2014-2015 audit report was listed on the agenda, but it has not yet been received.
In other business, the board approved the M.U.S.I.C. insurance renewal and the umbrella policy and heard a maintenance update.
The Christmas program was set for 7 p.m., Dec. 16, with the eighth grade trip approved for May 7 and eighth grade graduation scheduled for May 5, a date that could change if any bad weather days are made up at the end of the year.
The board did not hold the executive session that had been listed on the agenda.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15.
Newtown-Harris
Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple said the Newtown-Harris Board of Education also set its filing dates as Dec. 16 through Jan. 20, 2015 for those who wish to seek office in the April 7, 2015 board election. The three-year terms of Marty Altiser and Mike Otto will expire, as well as the one-year unexpired term of Brad Smith.
Board members held a discussion concerning the low number of students participating in basketball and agreed to purchase new junior high and high school track uniforms for the 2015 season. It was announced that the district has new Motorola radios to help increase communication between buildings.
Dr. Copple said attendance at parent teacher conferences increased this year over last year. Attendance in preschool through sixth grade was 86 percent this year in comparison to 74 percent last year. Attendance for grades seven through 12 was 66 percent compared to 63 percent last year.
Several upcoming events were announced, including grandparents/relatives day, which is set for Thursday, Nov. 20; CPR certification, set for Saturday, Dec. 6; Thanksgiving Break, Nov. 26-28; and the Christmas program, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8.
