NCMC Forms Partnership With PowerUP Program

Oct 14, 2014 | Headline News

The teacher education program at North Central Missouri College in Trenton has formed a partnership with the North Missouri Center for Youth and Families PowerUP! program.
NMCYF, founded in 2011, is a not-for-profit organization providing services for citizens of Chillicothe and its surrounding area. In addition to offering the PowerUP! program, NMCYF also offers services to adults and family members interested in attending support classes, educational training, and family enrichment activities.
“The need for quality volunteers is constantly presenting itself, so we began exploring ways to make serving with us appealing,” said Daniel Savage, NMCYF Executive Director. “We know how important it is for college students to gain hands-on experience outside of the classroom, and by offering a place where they can do that, along with giving our kids a consistent and positive influence, is a double win.”
Savage visited the NCMC campus to present the volunteer idea, working through Johanna Baugher, NCMC’s teacher education instructor.
“We were excited to learn of the possibility of this cooperative effort with the NMCYF program,” Mrs. Baugher said. “Our students can promote academic achievement in addition to other key competencies while gaining valuable field experience. This is a key component in their journey into a lifelong career in the teaching profession.”
“This is a great opportunity for our students and the children they will be working with at the Center,” said Dr. Sharon Weiser, NCMC Dean of Instruction.
Last week, NCMC students began volunteering, spending time in the Learning Center, assisting students with homework and supplemental reading time, and other activities. Students will eventually have the opportunity to lead and present their own lesson plans during the program’s activity times.
