Anna Persell and Jessica Roy presented the program on Crowder State Park during Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Dr. Kevin Harris was the program chairman.
Ms. Persell, who serves as the natural resource manager, has been at Crowder Park since 2010. She said the park has 1,913 acres, including 17 miles of biking. hiking and equestrian trails. She talked about recent improvements to the park as well as others that are planned, including work on the shelterhouses and group camp area and painting the tennis courts. She said that use of the parks has shown a large increase over the past year, with camping numbers up over 26 percent from last year. The group camp, which houses up to 120 individuals, also gets lots of use throughout the year.
She noted that there are many activities held at the park each year, including seasonal hikes, a Kids to the Park Day and Summer Fun Day, all designed to get persons outdoors to enjoy nature. An upcoming event is the Halloween Night Hikes, to be held on Friday, Oct. 31. Hikes are planned at 6 and 7 p.m., with the movie, “Frankenweenie” to be shown at 8 p.m. There will also be crafts and snacks for visitors to enjoy.
Other upcoming events include the Turkey Day Trail 5K Run/Walk on Nov. 27, the Winter Wonderland Hike on Dec. 22, the First Day Hike on Jan. 1, National Kids to Parks Day on May 16 and Summer Fun Day on June 6.
During the business meeting, it was announced that around 100 entries are anticipated for next week’s Missouri Day Parade. Entries can still be made on the parade website, www.missouridayparade.com. Persons can also still purchase U.S. and Missouri flags that will line the parade route. Members were told that a program and a tour of the Thompson House would be given to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Next week’s program will be John Gill, who will talk about the Rotary Foundation.
