Sep 30, 2014 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs tennis team was handed a first-round loss by the Cameron Lady Dragons on Monday at the Class 1, District 16 Team Tennis Tournament in St. Joseph. Cameron reeled off five straight wins to end the dual and close out the team portion of Trenton’s 2014 tennis schedule.
The dual began with doubles play, where Alvynne Villacampa and Ashley Allen fell 8-3. Hannah Sowder and Hannah Robinson lost 8-3 as well and Claire Utley and Hannah Farmer fell 8-6.
In singles play, Utley lost 6-0, 6-0 and Robinson lost 6-2, 6-1. The two losses gave Cameron five wins and the dual was called with three of the other four singles matches still in progress.
At the time of the dual being called, Villacampa was down a set and a point, 6-4, 1-0. Hannah Sowder won her first set 6-2 and was leading the second 1-0. Allen dropped her first set 6-0 before battling back to take the second set 6-4. She trailed 1-0 in the decisive third set. Hannah Farmer had yet to start her singles match.
“Because it was team districts, once Cameron won five matches, we had to discontinue play because the match was over,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Lauren Boswell said. “Cameron played a more consistent tennis game than we did and, therefore, ended up winning the match overall as a team.”
Trenton will be back in St. Joseph later this week for the individual singles and doubles district tournaments.
