Joseph Henry “J.H.” Rockhold, a 97-year-old resident of Lineville, IA, died on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Home Care Center in Des Moines, IA,where he had resided since April 5.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at the Lineville Baptist Church, with Pastors Max Carmichael and James Burke officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville.
Open visitation is under way at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville. A family visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, at the church, prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Rockhold was born on Oct. 2, 1916 in Lineville, the son of Harl and Opal Sylvia Jefferson Rockhold. He was raised in Lineville where he attended school. He was married on May 24, 1936 to Nelma May Barrett. The couple farmed in and around Lineville for many years.
He was a charter member of the Lineville Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, church deacon and President of the Brotherhood for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Nelma, of the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Des Moines; a daughter, Sondra Retherford and her husband, Larry of Des Moines; a son, Gary Rockhold and his wife, Karen of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Sherri Beverly, Mike Retherford and Danielle Teplica; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bernice Morris and Berdine Lovett; and one brother, Maurice Rockhold.
