The Trenton High School tennis team was in action on Friday at the Benton Tournament in St. Joseph. The Lady Bulldogs finished 0-3 in the dual-style tournament.
Facing three St. Joseph teams, Trenton fell 4-1 to Benton, 3-2 to LeBlond and 3-2 to Lafayette.
In the opening dual, Trenton faced off with Benton. In singles play, Samantha Mihalovich fell 10-0 and Alainey Shipley-Fair was defeated 10-2. Doubles play saw Alvynne Villacampa and Claire Utley fall 10-0 and Hannah Sowder and Hannah Robinson lost 11-9. Ashley Allen and Hannah Farmer gave Trenton its lone win of the dual, topping their opponents 10-2.
Against LeBlond, Trenton made it interesting. Mihalovich and Shipley-Fair were defeated in singles play, falling 8-2 and 8-0 respectively, but the Lady Bulldogs made a run in doubles play. Sowder and Robinson won 8-1 and Allen and Farmer moved to 2-0 individually on the day with an 8-2 win. Villacampa and Utley came up just shy, however, falling 8-6 and LeBlond took the dual.
Trenton’s final action of the day saw the Lady Bulldogs in action against Lafayette. Mihalovich fell 8-0 in singles and Shipley-Fair lost 8-5. Doubles play saw Sowder and Robinson win 8-2 and Allen and Farmer wrapped up a perfect day, scoring an 8-1 win. Villacampa and Utley dropped their match 8-4, however, and Lafayette picked up the win.
Allen and Farmer’s perfect day landed them a second-place finish overall in doubles play.
“The matches were close and we could have won as a team against LeBlond and Lafayette if a few more games had gone our way,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Lauren Boswell said. “Although as a team we could have done better, we had some girls experience some individual success.”
Trenton’s tennis team will return to traditional dual action today, traveling back to St. Joseph for a regular dual with Lafayette. First serves are set for 4 p.m.
