The Trenton High School girls golf team was in action Thursday, traveling to St. Joseph for the Lafayette Irish Invitational at the Moila Country Club. The Lady Bulldogs carded a team score of 477 to place fifth in the seven-team field.
“The girls played pretty well,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Jeremy Austin said. “It was still pretty hot, but we had girls go out and do pretty well in our first tournament. It was a difficult course with a lot of real thick rough, but I think we made real big improvements, especially in our strategy.”
Trenton was led by Karley McCollum, who finished tied for 12th overall at the tournament with a score of 111. The mark was just four strokes away from 10th place, which was the final medal position at the tournament. McCollum arrived at her total with nine-hole marks of 57 and 54.
Behind McCollum was Caitlin McNabb, who shot a 113, good for a tie for 15th overall. McNabb carded a 55 on the front nine and a 59 on the back to reach her total. Jordain Oshel finished the day with a 123 after nine-hole rounds of 58 and 65 and Lauren Schmidt rounded out the team total with a 130 after a 66 on the front nine and a 64 on the back. Lana Raymo was also in action for Trenton, carding a 134 with nine-hole scores of 66 and 68.
“Karley, Caitlin and Jordain all had really good days,” Austin said. “We were a few strokes away from getting any sort of medals, but considering this is early in the season and the level of competition we saw at this tournament I am real happy with how we did. I think the girls should be proud of themselves.”
Savannah won the event with a team score of 398. LeBlond was second with a 408, Tarkio was third with a 433 and Maryville finished fourth with a score of 442.
After four-straight days of golf, Trenton will see some time off before getting back into action on Tuesday in a road dual with Richmond. Tee time is set for 4 p.m.
