Trenton Municipal Utilities has become aware of a payment scam that is targeting utility customers.
The scam is being conducted by phone where callers identify themselves as working for a utility (not necessarily TMU) and request payment on current or past due bills. Some are requesting payment by credit card or a reloadable, pre-paid debit card, or other means and all threaten to disconnect the customer if a payment is not made to the caller.
This is a scam, according to utility officials. TMU urges customers to guard their personal accounting and banking information and never share this information with an unknown caller. TMU mails billing statements and customer service representatives do not initiate calls to customers to collect payment over the phone.
Customers are asked to hang up on callers requesting immediate payment and report the call to law enforcement. Additionally you can contact TMU at 660-359-2281 to confirm if action needs to be taken on your account.
Additional tips for this and other related telephone scams:
• Do not give out personal or banking information.
• Immediately hang up and contact TMU (or the other reported source of the call) if someone calls unsolicited demanding payment on your account.
Questions regarding utility bills can be answered by calling TMU at 359-2281.
