Trenton R-9 Superintendent Becky Albrecht, Rissler Elementary Principal Jennie Boon and assistant principal Whitney Olson spoke to members of the Trenton Rotary Club during Thursday’s meeting. Mrs. Albrecht was the program chairman.
Mrs. Albrecht said 20 staff members would be joining the district this year, with classes beginning on Aug. 20. She noted that Kris Ockenfels is the new Director of Supportive Services and that Mrs. Olson was employed as an assistant principal at Rissler School, which is the largest populated building in the district. She talked about several changes in the district, including the installation of fiber optics to connect all buildings in the district, including the bus barn. The district is providing transportation for all pre-school children for the first time this fall. Seventh and eighth grade students will be using iPads as part of their curriculum this year with the high school being added next year. High school sports practices are also under way.
Mrs. Albrecht talked about the district receiving a 95 percent on its Annual Performance Report for 2013-14, which is the district’s “report card” for how well it does during the year. The report is much improved over last year, which was the first year the state implemented new performance standards. Mrs. Albrecht commended students, teachers and parents for working hard to meet the new standards, which included a perfect score for graduation rates and a near-perfect score for both attendance and academic achievement.
Mrs. Boon said there are seven new staff members at Rissler School as well as 515 students registered thus far in grades preschool through four. There are 20 new students at the school, with an open house scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18.
Mrs. Olson told about her experience in education, including being a classroom teacher, a director of elementary instruction and an instructor coach. She and her husband, Andy, a native of Jamesport, have two children and she is a former Rotary exchange student.
During the meeting, members were reminded of the mega-training which will take place on Aug. 23 in Chillicothe as well as the Pars vs. Polio fundraiser that will take place district-wide during the month of September.
Next week’s program chairman is Bruce Constant and he will have THS football coach Brandon Boswell as the speaker.
