The Trenton Police Department has released reports of accidents investigated recently, including an accident investigated Aug. 5 at the intersection of Merrill Street and Crowder Road.
According to a report filed by Officer Randy Burks, the accident occurred when a truck driven by Beulah M. Nichols of Trenton was traveling near the intersection and stopped in traffic. She then began backing, not seeing a sport utility vehicle driven by Quinton L. Sanson, also of Trenton, which was traveling behind her. She backed into Sanson’s vehicle, causing moderate damage to the front end. She then left the scene. Ms. Nichols was later found and ticketed for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and not maintaining financial responsibility for a vehicle.
Another accident was investigated Aug. 3 at the intersection of Ninth and Kerfoot streets.
According to Officer Josh Miller’s report, the accident occurred when a car driven by Ruth Ann Shipps of Spickard pulled from a parking lot and struck a car driven by Hadley M. Jennings of Trenton, which was eastbound on Ninth Street. Ms. Jennings struck her head on the visor and also complained of back pain and went by private vehicle to Wright Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Shipps was ticketed for failing to yield at an intersection.
Officer Matt Preston investigated an accident Aug. 1 in which a car driven by Frederick Pannell of Trenton was eastbound on Ninth Street between Harris Avenue and Highland Street when his car was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Darrell Williams II of Trenton. Pannell told Officer Preston that he and Williams exchanged information, but that Williams said he did not have insurance but he had a vehicle like Pannell’s at home and would make the repairs to the car. Later, Pannell contacted police, who contacted Williams. Williams substantiated Pannell’s story and said he had struck the car from behind because Pannell’s brake lights were covered in dirt and he did not realize he was stopping.
Williams was ticketed for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, following another vehicle too closely and failing to maintain financial responsibility for a vehicle.
Officer Seth Rorebeck investigated an accident at the intersection of 13th Street and Shanklin Avenue on July 28 that resulted in a power outage in a portion of town.
According to his report, the mishap occurred when Vicki P. Stimpson of rural Trenton was eastbound on 13th Street at a high rate of speed and lost traction. The van began sliding sideways from side to side and then went off the right side of the road, striking and breaking an electrical utility pole owned by Trenton Municipal Utilities. The vehicle turned over on its driver’s side and came to rest in a ditch, eastbound. The electrical wires attached to the broken utility pole came to rest on top of a fence, just above a propane tank. The wires started a fire on the fence, which was later extinguished by the Trenton Fire Department. One utility pole broke into multiple pieces while another had a broken wire support beam.
There was extensive damage to the front end and undercarriage of the van and moderate damage to the rest of the vehicle, which was towed from the scene. The driver was treated by Grundy County EMS at the scene, but was taken to Wright Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.
Ms. Stimpson was ticketed for failing to drive on the right half of the roadway.
