Dennis McDonald of Galt won Grundy and Linn counties, but did not pull enough votes in Livingston County to defeat incumbent Mike Lair of Chillicothe for the Seventh District State Representative seat. McDonald captured Grundy County by a 1,219-792 vote and also won Linn County, 611-571. However, Livingston County voters gave Lair a 1,461-812 majority to send Lair back to Jefferson City, 2,824 to 2,642. There is no Democrat candidate for the position.
Vote totals for uncontested Grundy County races included:
Republican – Associate Circuit Judge Steve Hudson, 1,749; Presiding Commissioner Rick Hull, 1,699; County Clerk Betty Spickard, 1,757; and Prosecuting Attorney candidate Carrie Lamm-Clark, 1,602.
Democrat – Prosecuting Attorney candidate Christine Stallings, 114.
Grundy County Republican voters also gave their support to Sixth District U.S. Congressman Sam Graves with 1,603 votes while opponents Christopher Ryan, Kyle Reid and Brian Tharp received 165, 103 and 59 votes respectively. On the Democrat ticket, Bill Hedge received 43 votes while Edward Dwayne Fields received 40 votes and Gary Lynn Crose had 32 votes. Graves and Hedge will be facing each other in the November General Election.
Grundy County voters overwhelmingly supported Constitutional Amendment No. 1, the Right to Farm Bill, by a 1,714-437 vote as well as Constitutional Amendment 5, the Right to Bear Arms proposal, 1,678-434. Amendment 7, the transportation tax, got support in Grundy County by a 1,073-1,070 vote while Amendment 8, the veteran’s lottery ticket, also won in Grundy County, 1,030 to 1,027. Constitutional Amendment 9, the electronic data search and seizure bill, was a 1,662-406 winner as well. Statewide, Amendments 1, 5 and 9 were the only proposals to gain approval from voters. The Right to Farm Bill was the closest race of amendments approved, winning by just 2,528 votes. A recount is anticipated.
Voter turnout was 36 percent in Grundy County.
In Mercer County, Joe Berger defeated two challengers on the Republican ticket for presiding commissioner and will face two independents in November. Berger got 318 votes while Stan Johnson received 285 votes and Donna Herdrich received 282 votes. For circuit clerk, Republican Tammy Crouse defeated challenger Shelley Willis, 634-311.
In Livingston County, Ed Douglas defeated Michael Poindexter, 1,555-705, to capture the Republican nomination for presiding commissioner and will face Democrat Billy Peniston and independent Jeff Foli in November. In Daviess County, Jane McKinsey defeated Kathy Kyser, 672-184, for the Democrat nomination for recorder.
Harrison County voters re-elected Tom Alley as Associate Circuit Judge as he defeated Johnathan Myer, 1,632-595 for the Republican nomination. There is no Democrat candidate. Rick Turner won the Republican nomination for prosecuting attorney, defeating Nathan Easton, 1,262-818. There is no Democrat candidate in November. For Circuit Clerk and Recorder, Sherece Eivins defeated Linda Anderson for the Republican nomination, 1,589-614.
